Module 1

Cognitive Aptitude

Evaluate your mental processing capabilities

Overview

This module assesses five key cognitive dimensions critical to aviation performance: spatial reasoning, selective attention, working memory, reaction time, and numerical processing speed. Each test is timed and progressively challenging. Your results contribute to the Cognitive dimension of your UAAT Profile.

Instructions

  1. 1You will complete seven separate cognitive tests, each measuring a different ability.
  2. 2Each test is timed. Work as quickly and accurately as possible — both speed and accuracy count.
  3. 3Spatial Reasoning: Identify which rotated shape matches the original. You must mentally rotate the shapes.
  4. 4Attention & Focus: A Stroop test — identify the COLOUR of the text, not the word it spells.
  5. 5Working Memory: Watch a sequence of highlighted cells, then reproduce the sequence from memory.
  6. 6Multi-Instrument Monitoring: Scan a cockpit instrument panel and identify the anomalous reading before time runs out.
  7. 7ATC Instruction Recall: Read a complex ATC instruction, then answer questions about specific details from memory.
  8. 8Reaction Time: Click as fast as possible when the screen changes from red to green.
  9. 9Number Processing: Solve mental arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, percentages).
  10. 10You can choose your difficulty level before starting. Higher difficulty means more questions and less time.

Example Questions

Q1: Spatial: A shape is shown. Which of the options is the same shape rotated 90°?

Answer: Option B (the correctly rotated version)

Mentally rotate the original shape clockwise to match.

Q2: Attention: The word 'BLUE' is displayed in RED text. What colour is the text?

Answer: Red

Ignore the word meaning — focus only on the ink colour.

Q3: Number: 47 + 38 = ?

Answer: 85

Speed matters — answer as quickly as you can.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Ensure you are in a quiet environment with no distractions.
  • Use a mouse or trackpad for best results — touchscreen may be slower.
  • For the Reaction Time test, keep your finger hovering over the click area.
  • Don't overthink — your first instinct is often correct for timed tests.
  • If you make a mistake, move on quickly. Time is more valuable than dwelling on errors.

Once started, the timer cannot be paused. Ensure you are in a quiet environment.
